Featuring Dr Heather Shepherd BA (Hons) RN DipHE PhD, Senior Lecturer, Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Medicine and Health; Theme Lead, Evidence for Practice, Central Sydney (Patyegarang) Precinct; Co-Lead, Implementation Science Academy, Sydney Health Partners

This webinar will take a deep dive into what we mean and how we choose implementation strategies. This will help us to understand and articulate the different outcomes of interest for those passionate about translating research into practice.  Implementation science is about the study of methods to promote the systematic uptake of research findings and evidence-based practices.  Those methods are the strategies we use to respond to human behaviour, organizational inertia, infrastructure and resource constraints.

Four key learning outcomes of this webinar:

  • Understand what is meant by implementation strategies.
  • Identify key implementation strategies used in implementation science, and why?
  • Understand the importance of matching strategies to barriers and enablers.
  • Identify ways to measure and report implementation success

Dr Heather Shepherd BA (Hons) RN DipHE PhD is a Senior Lecturer in the Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Sydney, theme lead of Evidence for Practice and Lead of the Implementation Science Academy at Sydney Health Partners focussed on capacity and collaboration building between academic and clinical services. Heather's research and teaching roles are founded on her expertise as a health communication and health services researcher and her clinical background in critical care, reproductive and sexual health nursing, and health services management; currently leading teaching within Sydney Nursing School on quality and safety in healthcare, social determinants of health, and building curricula on health literacy, implementation science and quality improvement. Dr Shepherd's research focuses on implementation science, shared decision-making, doctor/patient communication, evidence-based medicine, health professionals’ perspectives, and development and evaluation tools to support health literacy and consumer empowerment.
