The Survivorship Special Interest Group (SIG) of IPOS is hosting the third webinar in their series on self-management titled "Self Management-III: SM Strategies for Patients Living with Cancer." This webinar aims to improve understanding of community-based SM and to bring together an international community of researchers and clinicians who are interested in self-management support for individuals affected by cancer.

Objectives:

  • Overview of community-based self-management programs
  • Empowering survivors through community-based self-management programs
  • Implementing community-based self-management programs: Lessons learned

FEATURING:

Eida M. Castro Figueroa, Dr.Castro-Figueroais an Associate Professor at Ponce Health Sciences University in Puerto Rico. She is a leading clinical psychologist with expertise in clinical, translational, and community-based participatory research (CBPR). Dr. Castro’s transdisciplinary research projects focus on the intersection of trauma, stress, and mental health and cancer health outcomes.  With over 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts and numerous NIH-funded grants, she's a prolific researcher and mentor, having guided over 20 graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and early-stage investigators. In 2013, she initiated a Psycho-Oncology line of research, unique in Puerto Rico, targeting mental health disparities in cancer care. As such, she has led community-based service programs promoting mental health among cancer survivors ; including recently NCI-funded CBPR cluster randomized controlled trial, aimed at promoting mental health among underserved cancer survivors and caregivers . Her commitment to addressing health disparities and advancing mental health among cancer survivors has earned her recognition, including the Puerto Rico Clinical and Translational Research Consortium Early Investigator Achievement Award in 2016.

Jayita Deodhar, is a Psycho-Oncologist and Palliative Medicine Physician with 30 years of experience. Having trained in both India and the United Kingdom, she currently leads the department of both Palliative Medicine and Psycho-Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, a premier cancer institute in India. Conducting psycho-social interventions and palliative care integration has made her mindful of the intricacies of diverse contexts and challenges of Psycho-Oncologyservice delivery and research in LMIC settings.She has served on the IPOS board of directors and chairs the LMIC committee. She is an Associate Editor in JPORP.
