IPOS Member Profile: Yosuke Uchitomi, MD, PhD (Japan)

IPOS has been my academic home for more than three decades. It has connected me with inspiring colleagues and lifelong friends around the world, shaped my thinking as a clinician-scientist, and continually reminded me that excellent cancer care must always include excellent psychosocial care. Receiving the Arthur M. Sutherland Award in 2025 was a deeply humbling honor. It reaffirmed my lifelong commitment to advancing the human side of cancer care while supporting the next generation of psycho-oncology professionals across the world."

For over 35 years, I have devoted my career to advancing the human side of cancer care . Although oncology continues to evolve through remarkable scientific and technological innovation, I believe that the essence of medicine remains unchanged: understanding each patient's hopes, fears, values, and relationships . My work as Professor and Chair at the Department of Cancer Survivorship and Digital Medicine, Jikei University School of Medicine, has focused on developing evidence-based psychosocial interventions, improving patient-clinician communication through the SHARE communication skills training program, and leading multicenter supportive care research through the J-SUPPORT program .

More recently, my research has expanded into cancer survivorship, digital medicine, artificial intelligence, and online peer support, exploring how emerging technologies can strengthen—not replace—the human connection that lies at the heart of compassionate cancer care . The title of my 2025 IPOS Arthur M. Sutherland Award Lecture, "Innovating the Human Side of Cancer: Unchanging Core, Ever-Evolving Care," reflects this guiding philosophy . Outside medicine, I enjoy spending time in nature and listening to jazz and classical music, which remind me of the importance of harmony, creativity, and attentive listening—qualities essential in caring for people with cancer.
