Building Research in Low- and Low-Middle-Income Countries – Creating Connections, Advancing Science.
2018 IPOS Research Training Academy in Hong Kong
Theme: Research Training Academy to Build the Future Generation of Psycho-Oncology Researchers in Low- and Low-Middle-Income Countries

Cancer poses an enormous and unrivaled burden on disease outcomes and quality of life among individuals in low-middle income countries (LMIC). Yet, despite the heavy toll that cancer and the associated psychological distress may take, the capacity to conduct research in LMIC is limited by a number of factors. Chief among these factors is the lack of high-quality training opportunities for those who wish to pursue psycho-oncology research in their local communities.

To address this problem, the 2018 IPOS Research and Training Academy (RTA) will provide opportunities for individuals from LMIC to receive advanced training in psycho-oncology research, networking and collaboration opportunities, and on-going mentorship from established IPOS-affiliated researchers. Such training is necessary for the development of structured psycho-oncology research programs in LMIC.

IPOS has received a generous grant from CRDF Global in partnership with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to offer NCI Travel Scholarships for early-career professionals from LMIC to attend the 2018 IPOS Research Training Academy (RTA) in Hong Kong. We are looking for matching funds to support this Training Academy and make it sustainable. Any contribution will help.

The 2018 RTA will use a combination of didactic seminars and hands-on research protocol development activities. Participants from LMIC will develop a research project and present it on the last day of the Academy to obtain feedback. We will pair our NCI Scholars with IPOS Mentors for continued scientific support over one year in implementing the research project within their respective countries.
