Target Audience:

Any professional working with cancer patients with some basic understanding of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.


Workshop Objectives:

The attendees will be able to:

  • Re-visit Cognitive Behavioural Therapy concepts and techniques
  • Look at the application of CBT to the cancer context,
  • Observe and participate in workshop therapy sessions using role play,
  • Consider methods of developing their CBT therapy skills in more complex cases,
  • Enjoy the opportunity to discuss with other participants how they might implement CBT into routine practice, and
  • Have the chance to do this work in a collaborative and supportive workshop context where the sharing ideas will be highly valued.


Workshop Description:

The basic principles and underlying theory of CBT will be described with the opportunity to observe the workshop leader “doing therapy”. Then for the remainder of the workshop participants will be able to enjoy doing various role plays and talking about how they might take this therapy forward into their usual work with cancer patients. The workshop is suitable for a people with wide range of therapy skills. The workshop is organized to provide an opportunity for experiential learning – and some fun!

The day is made up of the following.

  1. A brief discussion of underlying CBT theory and techniques.
  2. An interactive role play by the workshop leader (in English).
  3. A formulation exercise during which participants discuss in small groups (in their own language*) a therapy plan for a single case following by a whole group discussion (in English).
  4. An introduction to more complex cases where participants work in small groups (usually in their own language*).
  5. A whole group discussion (in English) of advanced practice issues.
  6. A whole group discussion (in English) of what has been learned, how to look for ways of developing future skills and a de-briefing.
