FEAR OF CANCER RECURRENCE ATTRACTS ATTENTION AT ASCO

The FORWARDS SIG was pleased to see that fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) was the topic of considerable interest at the recent 2017 ASCO meeting in Chicago, Illinois. The Annual Meeting brings together oncology professionals from around the world to discuss state-of-the-art treatment modalities, new therapies, and ongoing controversies in the field. This month Dr Jane Beith (Medical Oncologist, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney & University of Sydney) presented the first results of the Conquer Fear trial, a randomized controlled trial of an FCR-specific psychological intervention at ASCO. Dr Paul Jacobsen, Associate Director of the NCI Division of Cancer Control and Population Science’s (DCCPS) Healthcare Delivery Research Program (HDRP) also highlighted the increasing evidence for FCR interventions from three recent randomized controlled trials and highlighted the need to consider ways to bring effective FCR intervention into routine clinical care at the ASCO meeting.
