She holds a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Cape Town (which she obtained as a mature student), and did all her early social work training at the same university (Honours degree in Social Science). She studied for and completed a Bachelor of Administration Degree by correspondence through UNISA (University of South Africa) while she was home with her son prior to his beginning primary school.
Clare Manicom has 17 years of experience as a social worker in an oncology setting. She previously worked at a government-run hospital in the oncology wards and has been employed by a private oncology practice in Cape Town since 2000. She currently works with 6 oncologists, a chemotherapy treatment room and radiation therapy facility, and in-patients in two separate privately owned hospitals. Her scope of practice ranges through all stages of cancer illness and treatment, working with patients and their families, focusing mostly on case work but including discharge planning and end of life care. She is a supervisor within the company’s national social work team and as such in responsible for clinical supervision as well as for reviewing and implementing department policies, as well as drafting and editing administrative documents.

His primary scientific interests have been in organizational models for cancer care such as burnout prevention and network organizations, and in psycho-oncological interventions for patients and caregivers, with a specific focus on the application of the so-called third wave of CBT.
